"THE EXHIBIT WILL FEATURE A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF COLLABORATIVE WORKS BY CHRISTINE CHATWELL AND MICHAEL LINSTROM"
|
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ms. Chatwell began painting as a young adult while living in San Francisco. She studied at the Fort Mason Art Center, focusing her course work on portrait painting. She continues to paint portraits, and over the years, has added street scenes, cityscapes and abstract works to her portfolio. The inspirations for her street scenes comes mostly from Paris, a city she adores and visits on a regular basis.
Ms. Chatwell utilizes different styles at different times (impressionistic, fauve or expressionist) depending on which she believes would best communicate her feelings. Her goal is to identify and reflect those specific and unique qualities that create the essence of her subject. The artist considers a painting to be finished the moment this goal is accomplished, whether or not the end result looks refined or polished. To this end she uses lively brush strokes, simplified shapes and bold colors.
The artist is fascinated by the reflection of light. One can sense her excitement and wonder at the beautiful colors reflected on wet streets in the rain. Nocturnal scenes also intrigue Ms. Chatwell because of the luminous shadows juxtaposed against bright streetlights and lighted windows. At night details disappear and only the essential form remains.
SOME OF MS. CHATWELL'S ARTISTIC INFLUENCES:
*MICHAEL LINSTROM Christine has studied with Michael for many years beginning in the early 1990's. He has encouraged the artist to follow her "inside out" style of painting, thus affirming and trusting her love of self-expression.
*KANDINSKY believed that a painting should appeal less to the eye and more to the heart.
*ROBERT DELAUNAY- lively and joyful color, abstract style.
*CHILDE HASSAM "An artist should record contemporary life, render the intense life that surrounds one..." Bold color notes, loose brushwork captures delight in the moment.
*WHISTLER- simplified scenes, free brushwork, lack of detail, magical handling of paint, nocturns suggesting mystery with contours lost in shadow and figures emerging from the mist.
*ROBERT HENRI The artist's motive must be spiritual rather than materialistic, record only the lines and forms that communicate the greater meaning. Ask "What is essential?"
